Pataskala City Administrator Timothy Boland has to find a way to keep a contract with the YMCA after council on Monday failed to approve funding tied to the lease.
“We’ll have to determine the next course of action,” Boland said after the meeting.
According to The Week Community News of Licking County, the city negotiated a lease for the YMCA to operate the city pool in Municipal Park, but the lease included a provision for the city to spend up to $16,000 to improve the parking lot and up to $4,500 to help upgrade the pool building.
Estimates on both projects came in a total of $600 over budget, which is why Boland asked council to approve more funding.
Only four of the seven council members were present for the vote.
Council members Barbara Triplett, Pat Sagar and Brian Raybourne voted in favor of the motion to approve funding but Councilman Larry Meade voted against it.
Without a majority of council’s support, the motion failed.
Pataskala Mayor Steve Butcher requested Boland update council on the issue during council’s regular monthly workshop, slated for Monday, May 12.
Council members Bernard Brush, Kenny King and Chip Fraley were not present.
The lack of a full council also delayed a vote on whether to keep the police department in an aging building on Main Street or move the department somewhere else, possibly to City Hall on Broad Street.
Council did not discuss the issue because one of the four members present was ineligible to vote.
Council President Barbara Triplett was told by legal counsel that she cannot vote on the issue because she serves on the Central Ohio Technical College’s board and the school is considering leasing space in the police building on Main Street, if the city moves the police department out of it.
