Community members are invited to take part in building a contemporary, representational mound at the LeFevre Art Gallery on Saturday, May 3rd from 10 am – 2 pm. Bring a handful of dirt from home and place it at the installment in the middle of LeFevre Gallery at The Ohio State University at Newark. Rocks and photos can also be placed on the site. The installment will be on exhibit through June 9, 2008.
The installation is part of an exhibition that explores issues surrounding the occupation of The Octagon Mound in Newark, Ohio. The Newark Earthworks is considered one of the seventy ancient wonders in the world and has been nominated for consideration as a World Heritage Site.
This exhibition explores colonial, spiritual, cultural and community access issues.
“Access is an issue due to the site being occupied by a private country club whose golf course winds around and on top of the mound,” said Christine Ballengee Morris, Associate Professor and Coordinator of American Indian Studies at Ohio State University.
