The Licking County Coroner is conducting an autopsy to determine what caused the death of a 16-year-old inmate at the Multi-County Juvenile Detention Center in Lancaster.

16-year-old Brian Folden of Canal Winchester was found unresponsive in his cell when a guard conducted a routine sweep around 3 a.m. Wednesday.

Guards tried to revive Folden by using CPR until medics arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the Fairfield Medical Center a short time later.

Folden is the first person to die in custody since the jail opened in 2004.

Officials say Folden was admitted into the center on Tuesday because his probation officer thought he was abusing drugs.
